We looked at each other in the same way then
But I can't remember where or when. . ."

She's now a Sadie, Sadie, Married Lady. *sigh*

According to The Ethical Philosophy Selector, these are the philosophers I think most like:

1. Aquinas (100%)
2. Spinoza (92%)
3. John Stuart Mill (90%)
4. St. Augustine (90%)
5. Jean-Paul Sartre (84%)
6. Nel Noddings (83%)
7. Epicureans (79%)
8. Kant (77%)
9. Jeremy Bentham (67%)
10. Plato (64%)

The only time I've heard of Spinoza is on an episode of Jeeves and Wooster where Bertie goes to a bookstore to pick up a book of Spinoza for Jeeves and meets an ex-fiance of his. I guess I should read more from those top three at least. Oh wait - I read John Stuart Mill in college and thought it tedious. Although - I may be confusing him with someone else. I just can't get into philosophical writs. It's not easy reading.

I am going to be volunteering at SxSW. I didn't get into all the crews I wanted - after I waited in line for 35 minutes, most of them had filled up. Here's what I get to do:

On the Thursday (taking off work)before the festival starts I get to stuff bags from 8am to midnight.

I will be working registration for four 2 and a half hour shifts.

And I'll be working as theatre staff for the film festival.

I'm happy the way it worked out, because I got to choose my own schedule. I only have to take two whole days off of work. And I have 41 hours, so I get a film pass! Whoo hoo!

I met two girls in line with me and we signed up for the same crews, and some of the same shifts. That was neat. I'm so excited about volunteering now! All I have to worry about is how I'm going to get down to the convention center. I'll figure something out. . .

Last night at the gym Rose recognized me in the changing area. I had just finished thirty minutes on the treadmill and was headed to the weights, when I heard, "Elizabeth!" I thought it was just part of someone's conversation until they said it again and I realized they were calling me. And it was Rose from high school. She looked the same. I never realized how short she was. Perhaps I've grown (hah!). She told me she's working for the Texas Observer and is planning on starting to teach in the fall. I asked about her older sister Eileen (who I called "Elaine"). Apparently she just finished law school and her husband is finishing up med school. I asked Rose how long she'd been coming to the gym and she told me since before she got married. So both these girls are married?

Driving home I realize that besides my sister all my girl-friends are married now. Driving through my apartment parking lot, I remember: Kimberly's not!

For some reason, this gives me satisfaction.

Saturday morning I went to Target and bought:

Michelle Branch, Hotel Paper
Radiohead, OK Computer
Flaming Lips, Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots

I have listened to the Michelle Branch CD pretty much whenever I can. I really like her sound, although she likes to end all of her songs the same way, repeating the first line of the song at the end.

I bought the Flaming Lips CD because Alice raved about them when I saw her. As I was driving her back to Karen's house she sang me two of their songs. I think it was "Yoshimi battles robots" that decided me. What a strange album. I like it though.

OK Computer is somewhat scary. I listened to it while baking bread on Sunday night and was afraid of blasting the neighbors. I love, love, love "Karma Police".

Last night I finished reading To say nothing of the dog, a really funny sci-fi book. I really got into it and it wasn't a difficult read. I liked it. Now on to Gabriel Garcia-Marquez' autobiography and Financial Planning for 20s and 30s.

She is getting married next weekend, not eloping. Apparently her pastor was offended she would even think of eloping and not let her marry them. V gets to go up for it. As soon as I heard that, I asked, "So she's gonna be your maid of honor?" and she told me that it's going to be too informal a ceremony for that. I was driving in the spotty rain, being splashed by a mail truck, and feeling very disappointed. I'm so sorry that I can't afford to go to New Mexico for her wedding. Somehow it feels worse now I know that V is going.

I joked about a bachelorette party and having one this summer, but she can't drink for it, so why plan on one? I said, "Well, you can be the designated driver." She informed me there are no male strip clubs in her city and I told her she knew how I felt about that business.

I still can't believe she is getting married and I won't be there for it. Eloping was okay, but this. . . it's just a sad thing.

My crew preferences for SxSW:

1. Interactive Program Editors
2. Registration
3. Information
4. Publicity and Press
5. Technical (setting up computers 'n stuff)
6. Web Awards program
7. Film Awards Show
8. Interactive Panels

It would be sweet if I got to work on the Interactive Program. We'll see! The volunteer sign-up is next weekend. I have no idea what crew I'll end up on.

I have applied to Mixed Breed Rescue for a dog. We'll see what happens!

It was so strange knowing that Kirk was back in Austin. Both Michael and I were a bit amazed to see his name in the program. We both assumed he would be out in New York, making a name for himself. I googled him last night and it turns out he is teaching at an acting school program for kids.

I had kept in contact with him up until college, but my freshman year I wrote him a letter that I think probably scared him. I can't even remember what I wrote, but freshman year was so extremely hard for me. Is freshman year easy for anyone? I would like to meet up with him again, if only to hear what he's been up to.

She is definitely pregnant and we discussed the different aunties this child will have. She is about 90% sure she will keep it.

I felt slightly guilty because she told me that he and I are the only ones who know. I couldn't tell her that I had to tell L as soon as I could (or that I put anything on here). She said, "I felt like I was going to burst if I couldn't tell someone." Which is how I felt. Besides, L and she don't have any friends in common and L won't tell.

And I am sure no one who knows her reads this blog. I might be the only one who reads it. I didn't even make it an obvious link on my main blog.

Yesterday I noticed that she called me on my cell phone twice at work. Thinking there was some emergency, I called her back and left a message. She called later on in the afternoon and told me that it wasn't an emergency. She is just going to elope next weekend and may indeed be pregnant. All I could say was, "Wow." or "Whoa." She was calling me Auntie Elizabeth and all I could think was, I don't get to be maid of honor?!

She's going to the doctor today to find out for sure. I don't know what to think. Whatever she wants, I'm all for it. It is strange though; we thought it would be the other way around in school - that I'd be the one having kids and that she'd be the one single and working hard. That's what you get for thinking!
